Buying Pipe in Dubai Is Easy. Buying the Right Pipe Takes a Checklist.
Dubai has no shortage of pipe sellers. Between Jebel Ali, Dubai Investment Park, Al Quoz and the Sharjah industrial areas, you can find seamless and welded steel pipe in almost any size. The hard part is not finding pipe. It is making sure the pipe that arrives on site is exactly what your specification asks for, with paperwork that survives inspection.
That has become more important in 2026. Regional shipping disruption has made import lead times longer and less predictable, so many buyers are leaning on stock already held in the UAE. More demand on local stock means more reason to check it carefully.
Here is the checklist our sales engineers use with buyers every day.
Step 1: Decide Seamless or Welded (Before You Ask for Prices)
The choice usually comes from the design code and the service, not from price alone.
- Seamless is the common choice for high pressure, high temperature and critical process lines, and for smaller diameters.
- Welded (ERW, LSAW or spiral) is economical for larger diameters and for many pipeline, utility and structural uses.
If you need the full technical comparison, read our seamless vs welded pipe guide. If you are choosing between A106, A53 and API 5L, see our pipe grade comparison.
Step 2: Write a Complete Line Item
Most delays start with an incomplete enquiry. Every line should state:
| Item | Example |
| Product and construction | Pipe, seamless |
| Size | NPS 6 (168.3 mm OD) |
| Wall thickness | SCH 80 (10.97 mm) |
| Material grade | ASTM A106 Gr B / API 5L Gr B PSL2 |
| Ends | Bevelled ends (BE) |
| Length | Double random (about 12 m) |
| Coating or finish | Black, varnished |
| Supplementary requirements | NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156, if sour service |
| Quantity | 240 m |
| Documents | EN 10204 3.1 |
Unsure about sizes or wall thickness? Our pipe size chart and pipe schedule guide cover the common sizes, and the pressure rating guide explains how wall thickness affects allowable pressure.
Step 3: Ask “In Stock” or “Mill Order”?
This is the question that decides your schedule.
- Ex-stock in the UAE: material is already in a local yard. Delivery can be days rather than weeks, and you can often inspect it before you pay.
- Mill order or import: material is produced or shipped to order. Lead time depends on the mill’s rolling schedule and on freight, which is currently less predictable for Gulf-bound cargo.
Ask the supplier to confirm stock with heat numbers and quantities, not just “available”. A real stockist can tell you which heats are on the rack today.
Step 4: Check the Mill Test Certificate (MTC)
The MTC is the pipe’s identity document. Under EN 10204:
- A 3.1 certificate is issued by the manufacturer’s authorised inspection representative, independent of the manufacturing department.
- A 3.2 certificate is also verified by an independent inspector, either the purchaser’s representative or an inspector named in official regulations.
When you receive a certificate, check that:
- The heat number on the certificate matches the stencil on the pipe.
- The standard and grade on the certificate match your order, including every certification if the pipe is dual- or triple-certified.
- Chemistry and mechanical results fall within the standard’s limits.
- Testing required by the specification, such as hydrostatic testing or non-destructive examination, is recorded.
- The manufacturer is identified and, for project work, appears on the approved vendor list.
Red flags: identical chemistry across different heats, missing mill details, heat numbers you cannot trace to the pipe, or a certificate that looks edited. If something looks wrong, ask for the original from the mill.
Step 5: Inspect Before Dispatch
For project and critical-service material, agree inspection before the truck leaves:
- Visual and dimensional checks: OD, wall thickness, ovality, end finish and straightness.
- Marking check: stencil or paint marking matches the certificate.
- Positive Material Identification (PMI) for stainless and alloy steel, to confirm the alloy.
- Third-party inspection (TPI) if your project or client requires it.
Step 6: Understand What Drives the Price
If two quotes differ widely, one of these is usually why:
- grade and certification level (PSL1 vs PSL2, NACE, 3.1 vs 3.2)
- mill origin and approval status
- size, schedule and quantity
- seamless vs welded construction
- stock vs mill order
- freight, insurance and current surcharges on imported material
The cheapest quote with the wrong mill or missing certificates often becomes the most expensive one at inspection.
Step 7: Choose the Right Kind of Supplier
Manufacturers, distributors and stockists each have a role. Our article on steel pipe distributors vs suppliers explains the difference. For most UAE buyers, a local stockist with traceable mill sources offers the best mix of speed, documentation and flexibility.

- ☐ Full line item: size, schedule, grade, ends, length, finish, quantity
- ☐ Supplementary requirements (PSL2, NACE, impact testing) stated
- ☐ Stock confirmed with heat numbers, or mill lead time agreed in writing
- ☐ EN 10204 3.1 or 3.2 certificate requested and checked
- ☐ Mill on the approved vendor list (project work)

FAQs
Where can I buy seamless pipe in Dubai? Pipe stockists are concentrated in Jebel Ali, Dubai Investment Park and the Sharjah industrial areas. Choose one that can confirm stock with heat numbers and provide EN 10204 3.1 certificates.
How long does pipe delivery take in Dubai? Ex-stock material can often be delivered within days. Mill orders and imports take longer, and in 2026 shipping times to Gulf ports have been less predictable.
What is the difference between EN 10204 3.1 and 3.2? A 3.1 certificate is issued by the manufacturer’s independent inspection representative. A 3.2 certificate is additionally verified by the purchaser’s inspector or an officially designated inspector.
Is welded pipe cheaper than seamless? Usually, especially in larger diameters. But the choice should follow the design code and service conditions, not just price.
What should a pipe enquiry include? Size, schedule, grade, seamless or welded, ends, length, finish, quantity, supplementary requirements and the certificates you need.
